Day 17 - Midnight Oil

It was always going to be a long day.

I started working on the delicate nut and eventually got the thing set . .

Eric got started on winding his pickup. Yep, no off-the-shelf components here, everything hand-made. Apparently, due to some quirk of electromagnetics, hand wound coils are better than machine produced ones . .

A bit of testing and he was done!

As I was working on my nut I found that the neck was slightly bowed towards the front so I needed to adjust the truss-rod (something I have never had to do before) and consequently tested out the access mechanism that I had lovngly created last week . . .

Eric is well ahead of everyone, but of course he only has four strings and one pickup! He got onto final fret grinding for alignment and playability . .

Then finally buffed up the entire neck . .

We retired at 3pm for lunch which was mostly comedy sausage with wine . .

We returned at 6pm for a 7 hour marathon. The pace slowed a little and some final neck work was done in the fading sun  . . .

We agreed a candidate set list for Friday.

The drinks fridge had been operating weakly for the course as it needed defrosting. The icebox/freezer was inpenetrable so Eki decided to do an emergency defrost. You can accept the occasional beer which isn't quite at zero degrees, but tonight we are eating in the workshop and we need ice cold wines and hierbas! There were some serious chunks of ice that were removed during this process . . .

I started work on winding my two P90 pickups using the ancient dark secrets . .

We had our usual informal refreshment breaks . .

The TV crew returned at 10pm by which time we ordered our dinner of mixed pizzas from Macondos.

We ate while the guitar oil heated up. It may have been just pizza but we had some pretty good wines from Rioja, Formentera and Ribera del Duero to accompany the food . .

Kiko was on hand to clear up any leftovers . .

The wine flowed . . .

The TV crew did their stuff . .

While serious 'midnight oiling' started . .

The swamp ash of my guitar body absorbed about half a litre of oil and hierbas like a thirsty drunk. As the oil settled we chatted with the crew . .

Eric oiled his fretboard  . . .

I checked out the style . .

We left our guitars to dry at about 2am and returned for a few final fundadors a casa . . .

Hasta!
