Day 4 - Finding Fretboard

Another HOT and HUMID day. I am starting to hallucinate with fantasies of cold, rainy weather . .

Daniel is also blogging his guitar making experience, and for those that want a more detailed technical viewpoint witrhout the wine references you can check it out here.

We continued refining our necks and they started to look like something approaching expectations . . .

Some serious truss-rod work was also done. This is what stops the guitar neck turning into an archer's bow when you tighten steel strings over it. I suspect this is not the first time Eric has had his truss fitted . . .

I thought this might be an appropriate time to show you some of the 'kit' in the workshop. Most of it seems to pre-date the Napoleonic wars but it is all VERY solid, and with none of this modern pinko health and safety protection crap. You wont see any sawblade guards here. Apparently, the Geneva Convention on weapons of mass destruction doesn't apply. Here, if you want your fingers taken off, you can do it without restriction and with the speed that would make Usain Bolt look like a one legged man with arthritis .  . .

Some nice sculpting going on  . . .

Now, with a little imagination, you can actually kind of see an embryonic guitar forming . . .

Later in the day, we selected fretboard wood, mostly Ebony or Rosewood. For a little difference, I chose Bubinga. Seems it has a couple of other names too. . .  Looks nice, apparently somewhat 'ebony-like' in playing. The we planed and cut and honed, and had to apply the raw fretboards to the necks with some serious epoxy glue . .

After which, we built the 'neck sandwich' to ensure they all stuck evenly . . .

After a couple of fine Alhambra beers, selected by Frank, we returned to Casa Magnuson for a few drinks and dinner. Unlike Mr Clapton, we could find our road home and it was stunning . . .

Passed by Manolo's cycle hire shop at Cala Saona en route . . .

Up the little dirt road . . .

And settled in for an apero at Eric's pad looking at the view from the living room . . .

Great dinner at Chacala's, no longer owned by the guy (now in prison) who burned down Paco's Sol Restaurant three times in a fit of hypercompetitive behaviour . . .  Very nice Rioja too . . .

It has been as hot at 7am and midnight as is has been at 2pm, but during this night the wind changed (well, there wasn't any before) and it seems we might be in for a slightly less humid Day 5 and temperature dropped to 31. Nice . . .

Hasta Manana . . .
